On 30 November 2016, the new European Steering Group on Promotion and Prevention met for the first time with a view to approving its mandate and work plan until the end of 2017.

Made up of representatives from all European Union and European Economic Area countries, the group was set up by the European Commission to:

1. provide the Commission with advice for annual work plans under the Health Programme,
2. help Member States to implement actions related to health promotion and disease prevention.

In the EU, chronic diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, cancer and respiratory diseases result in the premature death of more than 550 000 people of working age each year, and represent a loss of EUR 115 billion annually. The more we focus our health systems on prevention now, the less we will pay in treatment in the future.
