Jan and Roel Smolders are brothers: Jan runs a nursing home in Belgium, Roel is a health technology expert. Together, they created the Active84Health Explorer, a smart system allowing users to freely explore towns and countryside while cycling on a stationary bike.

While this project started as a AAL* project, the two brothers will certainly experience a fresh impetus with the reward of the first AAL Smart Ageing Prize! Out of 200 entrants, Jan and Roel were chosen for having creating a product that uses the Internet of Things to keep residents of nursing homes physically active. The system also supports cognitive well-being by stimulating memories (of areas they may have lived in).

The Activ84Health Explorer has application for healthcare professionals who can use the collected data to monitor the health and well-being of the elderly.

*The AAL Programme is an EU-funded research programme dedicated to supporting research on innovative ICT-enhanced services for ageing.
